Celebrate Recovery Purpose Statement:

The purpose of Penn Yan United Methodist Church’s Celebrate Recovery ministry is to fellowship and celebrate God’s healing power in our lives through the 12 steps and “8 Recovery Principles.” This experience allows us to “be changed.” Since 1991, over 500,000 people have participated in local Celebrate Recovery programs. We open the door by sharing our experiences, strengths and hopes with one another. In addition, we become willing to accept God’s grace in solving our lives’ problems. By working and applying these Biblical principles, we begin to grow spiritually. We become free from our addictive, compulsive and dysfunctional behaviors. This freedom creates peace, serenity, joy and most importantly, a stronger personal relationship with Jesus Christ and those around us. As we progress through the program, we discover our personal, loving and forgiving Higher Power—Jesus Christ—the one and only true Higher Power

Celebrate Recovery Is:

  1. A safe place to share.
  2. A refuge.
  3. A place of belonging.
  4. A place to care for others and for others to care for you.
  5. A place where confidentiality is highly regarded.
  6. A place to learn.
  7. A place to demonstrate genuine love.
  8. A place to grow and become strong again.
  9. A place for progress.
  10. A safe place where you can take off your mask and allow others to know who you are.
  11. A place for healthy challenges and healthy risks.
  12. A possible turning point in your life.

Hurts, Habits & Hang-ups

A Christ Centered Recovery Program based on the 8 principles in the
Beatitudes to help us with our hurts, habits, and hang-ups. A hurt, habit, or hang-up is something that hinders our walk with Jesus Christ.

The feeling of being HURT is an emotional reaction to another person’s behavior or to a disturbing situation (abuse, abandonment, codependency, relationship issues, etc.)

A HABIT is an addiction to someone or something (alcoholism, drugs, food, gambling, sex, shopping, smoking, etc.)

HANG-UPS are negative mental attitudes and emotions that are used to cope with people or adversity (anger, depression, fear, unforgiveness, etc.)

These life problems can be stumbling blocks or stepping stones. Healing is available through applying the principles of a Bible based recovery process to our lives.

Five reasons why Celebrate Recovery is Unique to other Recovery Programs:

  1. CR is based on God’s Word, the Bible.
  2. CR emphasizes spiritual commitment to Jesus Christ.
  3. CR emphasizes personal responsibility.
  4. CR utilizes the Biblical truth that we need each other in order to grow spiritually and emotionally.
  5. CR addresses all types of hurts, habits, and hang-ups.
